Am I Worth More Than These?

Updated: Feb 16, 2024

A young girl once approached and asked me how much she would cost--how much I thought she’d be worth if I were to name a price...I was speechless, and she was serious.

I had no answer. I was shocked. In my mind, I had so many questions for her: ‘What?!’ I don’t even know how to answer that question. Where did this thought come from? Why would you ask me that?” I thought for a moment and a few numbers came to mind, but I was stumped by the idea of even attempting to name a price for her because no number, not even the highest I could think of, seemed right. Even the thought of naming a price for human worth felt absurd and, honestly, impossible.

My heart quickly asked, “Lord...?” as I looked at this little girl. It was quiet for a moment as she patiently waited, genuinely seeking an answer. The Lord spoke to me, and I knew just what to tell her. My heart was immediately calmed by this truth I heard. I looked at the young girl and confidently said, “I can’t even think of a number…and even if I did, the highest number I could think of or write down wouldn’t be enough…You are priceless…the tag would literally say ‘Priceless.’” As stunned as I was to hear her question, she looked at me, spirit lifted…and a smile began to form. She was relieved [and I was relieved]. She heard exactly what her heart needed to hear. God is good. Moments like this remind me that Christian mentorship and discipleship for young girls is [completely] and utterly worth it. We need the truth of God’s word to lead us back to the truth about what God thinks about us and his incredible love for us. His word reminds us of who we are and whose we are in Christ.

Remember this: God gave his son Jesus Christ to die for your sins so that he could have a relationship with you, so there is no question that you are priceless to him.

Matthew 6:25-34

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing?

Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

Here are more Bible study scriptures that talk about how God sees us as precious and valuable.

  • 1 Corinthians 6:20

“...for you were bought with a price…”.

  • John 3:16

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

  • Matthew 13:45-46

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls,

who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.”

Devotional Prayer

God, remind me of my worth and help me not to doubt your love for me. Help me live worthy of your sacrifice to have me back through your son, Jesus Christ. Forgive me of all my sins so I can have fellowship with you. Cleanse me from all my sins because only you can.

In the name of Jesus, I pray, amen.
